Beefcake

This series of cut-out drawings is inspired by pages from male bodybuilding magazines (known as beefcake magazine). These magazines are at the origin of a gay culture based on the reification of certain types of masculinity that are dominant and characteristic of patriarchy: strength, prowess, domination. But these magazines have initiated a form of disidentification, that is, a simultaneous identification with the masculinity represented and yet the use of this masculinity for homoerotic purposes and interests, contrary to the clearly heteronormative objectives of most bodybuilding magazines. The charcoal lines and cut-outs dissolve the image of the strong, muscular male body in favour of more flexible bodies. This process is a way for me to subvert normative representations of the body and desire.
